Robert Heffernan won the men's 50-kilometer walk Wednesday at the 2013 World Track & Field Championships.

Heffernan became Ireland's first male world champion in 30 years, with Eamonn Coughlan winning the 5,000 meters in 1983. Ireland's last gold medal was 18 years ago when Sonia O'Sullivan won the 5,000.

The 35-year-old Heffernan, who finished fourth at last year's Olympics, finished the race in a time of 3 hours, 37 minutes and 56 seconds.

Mikhail Ryzhov of Russia took the silver and Jared Tallent of Australia settled for bronze.

With no evening session, the walk was the only medal event Wednesday.
