A Hawaii man was arrested Wednesday in connection with credit cards reported stolen from Australian PGA Tour golfer Robert Allenby last month.
The Honolulu Star-Advertiser reported that 32-year-old Owen P. Harbison had been charged with three counts of identity theft and second-degree theft and one count of unauthorized possession of confidential personal information in connection with the case
The paper reported that Harbison was arrested at the Oahu Community Correctional Facility and was being held on $100,000 bail. He was due to appear in court next week.
Allenby, 43, was in Honolulu to play in the PGA Tour's Sony Open. He claimed to have been beaten and robbed on the night of Jan. 16, after missing the cut.
The golfer's initial account of having been drugged, kidnapped, robbed of his credit cards, and dumped out of a car six-and-a-half miles away was soon challenged by other witnesses. One of them, a homeless woman, denied that Allenby had been dumped out of a car. Another witnesses said Allenby suffered his injuries when he passed out and hit his head on a rock.
Allenby posted photos of a bloodied forehead and swollen eye to his Facebook account. He now says he has no recollection of anything from about 11 p.m. to 1:30 a.m. on the night of Jan. 16, part of which he spent at a wine bar.
In the aftermath of the controversy, investigators confirmed they were investigating fraudulent charges made on three of Allenby's credit cards totaling under $20,000.
