New York, NY – Texas Rangers outfielder Josh Hamilton is closing in on the single-season record for All-Star votes.
Hamilton had 7,310,824 votes in the final American League balloting update provided by Major League Baseball on Monday. Toronto Blue Jays outfielder Jose Bautista set the mark last year with 7,454,753 votes.
Curtis Granderson of the New York Yankees and Bautista are second and third in voting for the final two starting outfield spots.
New York Yankees shortstop Derek Jeter has received the second-highest number of votes in the AL with 4,407,982, while New York teammate Robinson Cano has overtaken Texas' Ian Kinsler at second base.
Rangers third baseman Adrian Beltre and catcher Mike Napoli, Detroit Tigers first baseman Prince Fielder and Boston Red Sox designated hitter David Ortiz also top the voting in their categories.
The All-Star squads will be revealed on Sunday. The Midsummer Classic will be played July 10 at Kauffman Stadium in Kansas City.
