Greg Anderson wins Horsepower Challenge

LAS VEGAS – Greg Anderson won the K&N Horsepower Challenge in an uncontested final round when teammate Jason Line's car broke on the starting line Saturday at The Strip at Las Vegas Motor Speedway.

Anderson's Chevrolet Camaro lost traction at the start, but he only needed to cross the finish line to claim his fifth victory in the lucrative Pro Stock all-star event.

With the victory Anderson earns $50,000 and a chance to walk away with more than $100,000 during the weekend. With a win in Sunday's DENSO Spark Plugs NHRA Nationals, Anderson could earn more than $50,000, including a $25,000 sweep bonus from NHRA.

"It's so much fun racing this race, you don't have to worry about points, you don't have to worry about screwing up or anything; you just go have fun and try to win the big cash," Anderson said. "Fifty grand is big to us. It's huge. It's obviously the biggest payday we can make a year.

"It's a great start to the weekend. I missed this race the last two racers. It feels great getting back in it and getting the blood flowing again on a Saturday afternoon in front of the grandstands and just racing."

In other racing on Saturday, Steve Torrence (Top Fuel), Jack Beckman (Funny Car) and Line (Pro Stock) claimed No. 1 qualifying positions and will lead their classes into Sunday's eliminations at the NHRA Mello Yello Drag Racing Series event.

In Top Fuel, Torrence held on to the top qualifying position with his Friday performance of 3.728 seconds at 325.30 mph in his Torrence Racing dragster. It is his first top qualifying position at The Strip, second of the season and seventh of his career.

With his track record elapsed time of 3.916 at 322.88 in his Dodge Charger, Beckman claimed his third No. 1 qualifier of the season in Funny Car, 18th of his career and first at LVMS.

Pro Stock points leader Line qualified in the top spot for the second time this season with his 6.687 second pass at 205.98 mph in his Chevy Camaro from Friday's second qualifying session.
