Munich, Germany – Mario Gomez scored twice late in the first 0, on Tuesday in Group A of the Champions League.
City played well for the first 30 minutes and had Bayern on its heels, but the hosts settled in at the Allianz Arena and pressured for the last 10 minutes of the opening half to open a two-goal lead and take control of the match.
Bayern extended its unbeaten streak in all competitions to 10 matches, and has scored 28 goals without conceding during the stretch. The Germans took control of the group, and sit alone atop the standings with a maximum six points.
Gomez, who has 12 goals in all competitions this season, scored both goals off rebounds in the area. The first came after City goalie Joe Hart made two saves on Franck Ribery and Thomas Muller in a matter of seconds.
Hart was unable to get back in position for a third successive save and, with City's defense watching, Gomez tucked the ball inside the right post from just a few yards out in the 38th minute.
Bayern notched its second goal in stoppage-time when Toni Kroos curled a free kick in from the left to the near post to Gomez, who was denied by Hart on his first attempt. The rebound fell to Gomez again, and he drove a shot inside the post to double Bayern's lead on the last play of the half.
Bayern had the only good scoring chances in the second half, and Manuel Neuer was rarely called into action as he posted his 10th straight shutout.
City has one point from two games and sits third behind Bayern and Napoli.
Manchester United 3, Basel 3
Manchester, England - Ashley Young scored his first Champions League goal in the 90th minute as Manchester United escaped with a 3-3 draw against Basel on Tuesday at Old Trafford in Group C.
Danny Welbeck scored twice in a two-minute stretch early in the first half for United, but the small Swiss side got two goals from Alexander Frei and another from Fabian Frei in under 20 minutes to take a shocking lead.
But as the final minutes ticked away, United poured on the pressure and scored just as the clock reached injury time when Young turned Nani's pass inside the left post from six yards.
Welbeck came within inches of handing United the victory as he headed wide off the restart, but the English side settled for another tie. United tied Benfica 1-1 in its first match in group play.
Basel beat Otelul in its opener and sits level on points with Benfica atop the group after two games and leads on goals scored. United is third with just two points.
Inter Milan 3, CSKA Moscow 2
Moscow, Russia - Mauro Zarate scored the game-winner in the 79th minute, just minutes after Vagner Love erased the Italians' early-two goal lead, and Inter Milan defeated CSKA Moscow 3-2 on Tuesday in Group B of the Champions League.
Lucio and Giampaolo Pazzini scored inside 23 minutes for Inter, as new manager Claudio Ranieri had his side in top form at Luzhniki Stadium, but Alan Dzagoev scored late in the first half and Love tied the match on 77 minutes.
Zarate rescued the win, Ranieri's second after a 3-1 win over Bologna in Serie A over the weekend his debut, when he scored 11 minutes from time.
Inter was shocked at home against Trabzonspor in its group opener, but earned three huge points on the road to position itself for a knockout berth.
Real Madrid 3, Ajax 0
Madrid, Spain - Cristiano Ronaldo, Kaka and Karim Benzema scored to lead Real Madrid to a 3-0 win over Ajax on Tuesday in a clash of teams with 13 combined European titles at the Bernabeu in Champions League Group D play.
Ronaldo opened the scoring after 25 minutes for his ninth goal in nine games, Kaka added the second goal four minutes before half and Benzema sealed Real's second win of the group stage four minutes after halftime.
Real, a nine-time European champion, took control the group with six points from two games and left Ajax, a four-time European champion, on just one point and in third place.
Napoli 2, Villarreal 0
Naples, Italy - Marek Hamsik and Edison Cavani scored three-minutes apart and Napoli beat Villarreal in Group A of the Champions League on Tuesday at Stadio San Paolo.
Napoli opened group play with a 1-1 draw at Manchester City, and Hamsik staked his side the lead in the 14th and Cavani doubled the cushion from the penalty spot in the 17th.
Napoli moved to second in the standings behind Bayern Munich, which leads with six points. Napoli has four points from two games, while City is third on just one point.
Trabzonspor 1, Lille 1
Trabzon, Turkey - Gustavo Colman converted a penalty kick in the 75th minute as Trabzonspor tied Lille, 1-1, on Tuesday at Huseyin Avni Aker to remain atop Group B of the Champions League.
Trabzonspor won at Inter Milan, 1-0, in the first group game and Colman bagged the tying goal after Moussa Sow scored the opener for the French champions.
Lille tied CSKA Moscow in its first match, and sits third on two points.
Lyon 2, Dinamo Zagreb 0
Lyon, France - Bafetimbi Gomis and Bakari Kone scored in the first half and Lyon defeated Dinamo Zagreb, 2-0, on Tuesday at the Stade de Gerland in Group D play of the Champions League.
Gomis opened the scoring in the 23rd minute and Kone followed in the 42nd, and it was enough for Lyon to post its first win of the stage. Lyon is second with four points, while Dinamo has lost its first two matches.
Benfica 1, Otelul 0
Bucharest, Romania - Bruno Cesar scored five minutes before half and Benfica edged Otelul, 1-0, on Tuesday at Stadionul National to pull level with Basel atop Group C of the Champions League.
Basel tied Manchester United, 3-3, in the group's other match, and Benfica - which tied United 1-1 in its first match - took advantage to leave United in third after two games. Otelul is last with two losses.
