Bayern Munich announced on Wednesday that striker Mario Gomez has signed a new contract with the club that keeps him at the Allianz Arena until 2016.

Gomez joined Bayern from Stuttgart in 2009 and has established himself as a prolific goalscorer, netting 28 Bundesliga goals last term while scoring 23 so far this campaign.

"I've always said that Bayern is a great club and that I feel comfortable here," Gomez told the club's official website.

"I am, therefore, glad this contract extension has now been agreed. I am excited about the future here."

Bayern secured a place in the semifinals of the Champions League on Tuesday with a 4-0 aggregate win over Marseille, while the club is three points back of Borussia Dortmund with six games remaining in the league season.
