Godzak, 2 relievers combine on Canisius' first Division I 9-inning no-hitter

Freshman Alex Godzak combined with two relievers to throw Canisius' first nine-inning no-hitter at the Division I level, beating Iona 8-0 in the second game of a doubleheader Friday.

Godzak (4-1), a left-hander from Syracuse, struck out six over seven innings and overcame walks to the second and third batters he faced to set down the next 20 in a row. He left after 90 pitches, and sophomore Rohn Pierce and junior Jon Fitzsimmons each struck out two in their perfect innings to complete Canisius' first no-hitter in nearly 20 years.

Mike Firth threw a seven-inning no-no against Buffalo on May 2, 1986, and Joe Mamott tossed one against Siena — also seven innings — on May 2, 1993.

Canisius (19-7) also won the first game 7-0, sweeping Iona (3-23).
