Washington, DC (SportsNetwork.com) - Veteran American Robby Ginepri was an easy first-round winner Monday at the $1.4 million Citi Open tennis event.
The qualifier and 31-year-old Florida native got past Colombian Alejandro Falla 6-4, 6-2 on the hardcourts at FitzGerald Tennis Center.
The one-time world No. 15 Ginepri is rewarded with a match against top-seeded Czech star Tomas Berdych.
An all-American affair saw Tim Smyczek douse qualifier Alex Kuznetsov 6-3, 6-0, while France's Benoit Paire took out Canadian Frank Dancevic 6-4, 6-0.
In another all-American matchup, Rajeev Ram outlasted Jared Donaldson by a 6-7 (1-7), 6-4, 7-5 score. American Donald Young moved on with a 6-4, 4-6, 6-4 win over Yuichi Sugita of Japan.
Other first-round wins came from Tunisia's Malek Jaziri, Slovak Lukas Lacko, Russian Evgeny Donskoy and Australians Bernard Tomic and Marinko Matosevic.
Three-time champion Juan Martin del Potro, who is not defending his title this year, beat two-time runner-up John Isner in last year's D.C. finale.
The top seeds this week are the former Wimbledon runner-up Berdych and rising Canadian Milos Raonic.
This week's U.S. Open Series winner will earn $316,400.
