SAN FRANCISCO (Reuters) - The World Series champion San Francisco Giants have signed six-time All-Star shortstop Miguel Tejada to one-year contract, the team said Thursday.
Tejada, the 2002 American League most valuable player, will earn $6.5 million.
"With a team like San Francisco, you don't say no," the 36-year-old Tejada told a news conference at AT&T Park.
Tejada played more games at third base last season for Baltimore and San Diego but his play at shortstop convinced the Giants to sign the free agent to replace Juan Uribe.
"He played like he did 10 years ago," Giants general manager Brian Sabean told reporters. "You guys are going to be surprised.
"He has a lot of baseball in him because of how he works at it, and he had great training."
Tejada is a career .287 hitter and has 300 home runs over 14 major league seasons.
