Giants jump out ahead through three innings of WS opener
San Francisco, CA – Pablo Sandoval homered in each of his first two at-bats against Justin Verlander as the San Francisco Giants have taken a 4-0 lead over the Detroit Tigers after three innings of Game 1 of the World Series from AT&T Park.
Sandoval delivered a solo shot in the bottom of the first and cracked a two- run blast during a third inning in which the Giants scored three times. Marco Scutaro, fresh off winning MVP honors in the National League Championship Series, preceded Sandoval's second homer with an RBI single.
Barry Zito, who spun 7 2/3 shutout innings to lead the Giants to a critical 5-0 victory over St. Louis in Game 5 of the NLCS, has yielded just two hits and a walk while striking out two over the first three frames.
Verlander has allowed all four San Francisco runs and been tagged for five hits.
The Tigers put two men aboard with one out in the top of the first, with Miguel Cabrera drawing a walk following an Omar Infante single, but Zito worked out of the jam by getting Prince Fielder to pop up and ALCS MVP Delmon Young to ground into a fielder's choice.
