New York Giants defensive end Jason Pierre-Paul had successful surgery to repair a herniated disc in his lower back, the team has announced.

The operation took place Tuesday at a hospital in Marina Del Rey, Calif. The two-time Pro Bowl selection is expected to require up to 12 weeks of recovery time.

That means Pierre-Paul will miss all of training camp and most of the preseason, but should be ready for the Giants' regular-season opener against Dallas on Sept. 8.

Pierre-Paul had been bothered by the nagging back problem last season. The decision to have surgery was made over the past week, after the player was examined by several doctors.

The Giants' 2010 first-round draft pick has 27½ sacks in 48 games.
