New York, NY – Mikey Garcia grabbed the WBO featherweight title with an eight-round technical decision over Orlando Salido Saturday night at Madison Square Garden.
Garcia (31-0) knocked down Salido (39-12-2) four times over the first four rounds and won by scores of 79-69 on two of the scorecards and 79-70 from the other judge. The fight was stopped due to an accidental headbutt in the eighth round that broke the nose of Garcia.
Gennady Golovkin (25-0, 22 KOs) kept his WBA middlweight belt with a seventh round technical knockout of Gabriel Rosado (21-6). The bout was stopped with 14 seconds left in the round.
In another championship fight, Roman Martinez (26-1-2) and Juan Carlos Burgos (30-1-1) fought to a 12-round draw. Burgos won 117-111 and Martinez gained a 116-112 upperhand, while the third judge had it 114-114. The result allowed Martinez to keep his WBO junior lightweight title.
