Former WWE star Alberto Del Rio said he missed a major wrestling event in Monterrey, Mexico, because he was attacked by a man with a knife before his flight.

In an Instagram post, the Mexican-born fighter posted photos of cuts in his scalp and on his forearm. A separate post, apparently written by someone other than Del Rio, said the wrestler, who is known as "El Patrón," fought the attacker off.

The post stated that Del Rio, 39, whose given name is José Alberto Rodriguez, had just finished eating dinner when he "was assaulted by a criminal with a knife outside the restaurant. Mr. Rodriguez suffered multiple lacerations on his arm and other parts of his body."

There was no given reason for the attack.

According to the post, police were called by witnesses. "Rodriguez received medical attention ... and was unable to make his flight.”

It went on, "Rodriguez has spoken with ownership of Lucha Libre AAA WorldWide and given them documentation of the incident ... [He] will not miss any of his shows for the remainder of the year and is ready to compete this weekend in the U.K."

According to, it’s unclear if any arrest has been made in the incident.

In September, Del Rio was released from his contract by the WWE, according to Rolling Stone, a month after having been suspended – along with his fellow-wrestler girlfriend, Paige – for violating the company's talent wellness policy. The details of the infraction were not made public.
