The Brazilian club that recently signed American midfielder Freddy Adu has hired former South African national team coach Joel Santana.

Bahia hired Santana on Monday, three days after the club confirmed its agreement with Adu. Bahia lost 5-1 to Vitoria in its opener at Arena Fonte Nova in Salvador, a result that led to the dismissal of coach Jorginho.

The 64-year-old Santana has been without a job since leaving Flamengo in July 2012. It will be the third time he coaches Bahia, a two-time Brazilian champion.

Santana coached South Africa in 2009 but was fired before the country hosted the 2010 World Cup.

The 23-year-old Adu ended his contract with Major League Soccer's Philadelphia Union last month.
