Paul Maurice, who had served as head coach of the Carolina Hurricanes during the early part of last season, will be behind the bench in Russia next year.

TSN of Canada revealed on Friday that the 45-year-old was named head coach for Magnitogorsk of the Kontinental Hockey League.

Maurice was fired in late November in favor of Kirk Muller after leading Carolina to an 8-13-4 record and a last-place standing in the Southeast Division.

The Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario native owns a career coaching mark of 460-457-167 with Hartford/Carolina (1995-04, 2008-12) and Toronto (2006-08).

Joining Maurice will be former Hurricanes goaltender coach Tom Barrasso, who will serve as an assistant.
