New York, NY – Mike Jacobs, a former major league first A affiliate, has been suspended 50 games after testing positive for human growth hormone.
Jacobs had played with the Mets, Marlins and Royals over the past six years and has 100 career big league homers in 556 games. He was playing for the Colorado Springs Sky Sox of the Pacific Coast League and was hitting .298 with 23 homers and 97 runs batted in.
The 30-year-old veteran was not on Colorado's 40-man roster. He spent most of last season in the minors and appeared in seven games for the Mets, the team for which he made his big league debut in 2005.
After hitting 11 homers in just 30 games for the Mets in '05, he was sent to Florida as part of the Carlos Delgado trade and became the Marlins' starting first baseman for the next three years. He hit 32 homers and drove in 93 runs in 2008 before being sent to Kansas City and was released by the Royals after the 2009 campaign.
This past winter he signed a minor league deal with Colorado.
