Former University of Akron point guard Alex Abreu has pleaded guilty in a drug case.

The 21-year-old was arrested March 7 after police say he accepted a package containing five pounds of marijuana.

On Monday, Abreu pleaded guilty to one count of felony drug trafficking.

He was sentenced to two years in prison and fined $5,000. But the judge suspended the sentence and waived the fine. Abreau was also placed on 18 months of probation and his driver's license was suspended for six months.

The Zips have released a statement saying Abreu remains suspended indefinitely from the basketball team.

It also says the school will review his case.

The Zips won the Mid-American Conference championship and a trip to the NCAA tournament without Abreu. The team lost to VCU 88-42.
