Cincinnati police officer Darrell Beavers, a former football standout who was drafted by the Philadelphia Eagles, faces charges of misconduct and allegations that he set up a fake substation and engaged in inappropriate behavior with an underage girl.
Police say they were contacted by concerned parents of a 17-year-old participating in a program for teens interested in a career in law enforcement. According to their investigation, Beavers had set up a fake substation in an apartment, which was searched by police and led to the discovery of a bed, personal lubricant, videos and a night vision camera belonging to Cincinnati police.
If convicted on all charges, Beavers could face 8 1/2 years in prison.
Beavers, 44, played football at Morehead State and was drafted by the Eagles in the 12th round in 1992. His draft stock likely slipped after he was arrested and pleaded guilty to a charge of criminal trespassing, in a case that he described to the Philadelphia Daily News as being in the wrong place at the wrong time.
He was released by the Eagles after 15 months, then played two years in Canada.
Beavers' superiors said they were unaware of the arrest and found the new charges surprising in light of Beavers' positive performance reviews.
