NEW YORK (Reuters) - Minnesota Vikings quarterback Brett Favre's playing status against the New England Patriots on Sunday likely will be a gameday decision, coach Brad Childress said on Friday.
"Probably so...because of the nature of the injury," Childress told reporters at the Vikings' Minnesota training facility.
Favre, who has two fractures in his left ankle, worked out on Friday but Childress was noncommittal on whether that meant the 41-year-old would play on Sunday.
"He did a little bit more today, which is encouraging," the coach said.
Favre has started 291 consecutive regular-season games. Whether he adds to that record-breaking streak depends on several factors, Childress said.
"Can he protect himself? What gives us the best chance to win?" the coach said.
If Favre provides that chance, Childress said he would like Favre to start.
Favre was listed as questionable in the NFL's weekly injury report late on Friday.
If he cannot play, the option is to start backup Tarvaris Jackson.
But the call is a day-to-day process.
"You always want to see by the end of today where he (Favre) is at and certainly as he comes back in the morning to see where he is at," Childress said.
"We still have got a lot of treatment time," the coach said. "Can bones heal in 48 hours? Probably not."
