The Kansas City Royals beat the New York Mets 5-4 in 14 innings in Game 1 of the World Series early Wednesday morning.
Eric Hosmer drove in the game-winning run with a sacrifice fly in the 14th after Alex Gordon tied the game at 4 with a solo homer in the bottom of the ninth.
The game went back and forth all night.
ALCS MVP Alcides Escobar led off the bottom of the first inning with an inside-the-park home run. The Mets tied it at 1 in the fourth on an infield single by Travis d'Arnaud, and took a 2-1 lead in the fifth on Curtis Granderson's solo homer. New York added a third run on a sacrifice fly in the sixth. Kansas City answered with two runs in the bottom of the sixth to tie the game at 3.
Royals starter Edinson Volquez allowed three earned runs on six hits and walk in six innings. He struck out three. Mets right-hander Matt Harvey had nearly an identical line: six innings, three earned runs, five hits, two walks, two strikeouts. The bullpens took over from there.
Game 2 of the best-of-seven series is Wednesday at 8 p.m. ET (on FOX).
