The Minnesota Vikings needed another productive pass rusher, and there were plenty of top-tier options available as free agency approached.

They decided to stay with the guy they had already developed in Everson Griffen. The five-year contract Griffen signed in March with a maximum value of $42.5 million was massive for a player who had never been a full-time starter, but the risk has paid immediate rewards for the Vikings.

Griffen is third in the NFL in sacks, with eight in eight games. He also is third in the league with 13.5 quarterback knockdowns, according to STATS.

Griffen will have a tough test this Sunday when he lines up against Washington left tackle Trent Williams.
