Elias' second goal of the game was the 348th of his career, moving him past John MacLean for the top spot in Devils history and spoiling the debut of new Montreal head coach Randy Cunneyworth.

Earlier on Saturday, the Canadiens fired Jacques Martin and named Cunneyworth as the interim coach. The team is now just 13-13-7 and sits in last place in the Northeast Division after dropping its second straight game.

Petr Sykora and Dainius Zuburs each had a goal and an assist while David Clarkson also scored for the Devils, who have won a season-high four straight. Martin Brodeur turned aside 23 shots.

Chris Campoli, P.K. Subban and Lars Eller all scored for Montreal, which fell to 5-7-6 at home this season. Carey Price allowed all five goals on 35 shots.
