Santa Clara, CA – The San Jose Earthquakes made a couple of late roster additions before the start of the new season as the club announced Friday that it has signed goalkeeper Evan Newton and defender Josh Suggs. Per league and club policy, terms of the deals were not disclosed.
Newton was selected by the Houston Dynamo in the 2011 MLS Supplemental Draft with the 7th overall pick, but did not make any appearances in league play for the MLS Cup runners-up. He was loaned out to FC Tampa Bay of the North American Soccer League where he played the full 90 minutes for two league matches.
Suggs last played for the Los Angeles Blues of the United Soccer Leagues Professional Division after playing four years at Humboldt State of the California Collegiate Athletic Association. In college, he featured as both a midfielder and a forward, netting 22 goals and adding seven assists in 73 appearances.
