INDIANAPOLIS – Dollar General Corp. will sponsor rookie Josef Newgarden in the Indianapolis 500.
The general merchandise chain sponsored Sarah Fisher Hartman Racing last season, and was on the car when the team scored its first IndyCar Series victory with Ed Carpenter at Kentucky. But Dollar General increased its NASCAR involvement this season, and it came at the expense of Fisher's organization.
Dollar General said Tuesday it will get behind Newgarden for the May 27 race.
Newgarden has been impressive through the first three races this season, and started on the front row of last week's race at Long Beach. He made a bold attempt to pass four-time champion Dario Franchitti before the first turn, and contact between the two ended Newgarden's race.
Newgarden will make his Indy 500 debut this season.
