Madrid, Spain (SportsNetwork.com) - Novak Djokovic has withdrawn from the Madrid Open as he continues to recover from a right arm injury.

Djokovic hasn't played since a semifinal loss to Roger Federer in Monte Carlo three weeks ago. The injury affected the Serbian star during the second set of that match, as he had trouble serving in a 7-5, 6-2 loss.

"I am very sorry for the Madrid tournament and all the Spanish fans to have to pull out of the Mutua Madrid Open," said Djokovic. "I did everything possible in order to play in Madrid, which is one of the biggest events of the year, but unfortunately my right arm injury has flared up again."

Djokovic won the Madrid crown three years ago and is next scheduled to play in the Italian Masters, which opens next Sunday in Rome.
