Baltimore Orioles slugger Chris Davis and Detroit Tigers pitcher Justin Verlander have been named the American League co-players of the week for the period ending Sept. 30.

Davis captured his first career weekly honor by clubbing five homers and driving in 10 runs for the Orioles, who clinched their first postseason birth since 1997 on Sunday.

Verlander won both of his starts during the week and allowed just two earned runs while striking out 16 over 15 combined innings.

Others considered for the award included Verlander's teammate, first baseman Prince Fielder, Oakland Athletics outfielder Yoenis Cespedes and Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim outfielder Torii Hunter.
