The starting quarterback for Davidson College has been suspended from the team after his arrest following a fight at his on-campus apartment.

The Mecklenburg County Sheriff's Office said on its website that 21-year-old John Philip "J.P." Douglas was arrested Sunday and charged with assault with a deadly weapon inflicting serious injury. He was released on a $5,000 bond.

A statement issued by the school Monday said Douglas was involved in a fight in which the other student sustained non-life-threatening injuries. The school said no firearms were involved, but two knives were recovered from the apartment.

Douglas, a senior from Roswell, Georgia, has thrown for 1,745 yards and 11 touchdowns, and rushed for four more scores during the 2014 season. The Wildcats have a 1-7 record and face Stetson next Saturday.
