Dave Gettleman is essentially the definition of "firm but fair." Apparently, we're seeing the "firm" side of that statement now, as he recently spoke to Bill Voth of Black and Blue Review about contracts.

"I will not negotiate in-season. Once the regular season begins, that's it," Gettleman told Black and Blue Review.

After already locking in new contracts for Greg Olsen, Cam Newton and Thomas Davis, it's obvious that he likes to get these things done early. This specific comment likely comes when talking about linebacker Luke Kuechly.

The Panthers have already picked up Kuechly's fifth-year option, but they are looking to try to get him a new deal sooner than later. Essentially, we've got just under two months before Kuechly's new potential deal will be on hold until next offseason.
