MARTINSVILLE, Va. – Darrell Wallace Jr. said he would win at Martinsville Speedway, and then he went out and did it.

He had no idea how big his victory was in Saturday's NASCAR truck series race, but it didn't take long for him to find out.

The victory made Wallace just the second black driver to win on NASCAR's national level, and the first in a half-century. Wendell Scott gained the only other victory in December 1963 in a race at Jacksonville, Fla., in what has become the sport's premier series.

Wallace has developed a relationship with Scott's family through NASCAR's Drive for Diversity program, and Scott's sons were watching Saturday.

Says Franklin Scott: "When the checkered flag dropped, I heard a big boom from heaven, and my daddy said, 'Hell yeah!'"
