UNKNOWN ? 1981: After winning the 1980 NASCAR Cup title in just his second full season on the circuit, the following season would be one of turmoil for Dale Earnhardt. He and his sponsor, Wrangler, would see the Pontiacs Earnhardt drove have three different owners during the year. After racing for Rod Osterlund in the first 16 events, the team was sold to Jim Stacy. After just four races with Stacy, Earnhardt and his sponsor moved to the Richard Childress operation for the rest of the year. The ride-hopping took its toll, as Earnhardt was shut out of victory lane, but still managed to finish seventh in Cup points. (Photo by ISC Images & Archives via Getty Images)
Dale Earnhardt was just beginning to make a name for himself in NASCAR in 1981, but his mustache already was becoming legendary.
His son, Dale Earnhardt Jr., took note of it with a throwback picture of his dad with Glenn Jarrett from when they made an appearance at a baseball game that year. Junior posted the photo on Twitter and noted that the two appeared to be having a discussion about "how pathetic everyone else's mustaches are."
To put it in the proper time frame, this photo was taken shortly after Earnhardt won the first of what would be a record seven NASCAR Premier Series championships. That remains tied with fellow NASCAR Hall of Famer Richard Petty and current driver Jimmie Johnson, who just won his seventh title, for the most of all time.
The 'staches sported by the elder Earnhardt and Jarrett, future NASCAR champion Dale's older brother and a son of yet another Hall of Famer in New Jarrett, were indeed spectacular.
But were they really dead ringers for two of Major League Baseball's stars at the time: pitcher Rollie Fingers, then with the Milwaukee Brewers, and New York Yankees slugger Don Mattingly?
Well, you be the judge. Their pictures are below.
