Dale Earnhardt Jr. benefitted from a fortuitously timed caution flag to win the rain-delayed and rain-shortened Quicken Loans Race for Heroes 500 at Phoenix International Raceway.
Defending NASCAR Sprint Cup Series champion Kevin Harvick dominated Sunday's race, leading 145 laps, but Earnhardt took the lead on Lap 195 when Harvick pitted right before a caution for a crash between Ricky Stenhouse Jr. and Joey Gase.
It took more than 15 minutes to clean up the debris from the crash and by the time it was completed, rain began falling again, this time heavily, forcing NASCAR to call a halt to the proceedings.
The start of Sunday's race was delayed more than six hours by persistent rain showers at the track, which is about 15 miles west of downtown Phoenix.
Behind Earnhardt and Harvick, Joey Logano was third, followed by Kyle Busch and Jimmie Johnson.
Jeff Gordon had already clinched a spot in next week's season-ending Championship 4 Round at Homestead-Miami Speedway and three other drivers will advance on points after Phoenix: Harvick, Kyle Busch and Martin Truex Jr.
