Guangzhou, China (SportsNetwork.com) - The only seed still standing in Guangzhou was a second-round victor Wednesday at the Guangzhou International Open tennis event.

Second seed Alize Cornet of France came from behind to avoid yet another upset in the draw when she outlasted Israeli and 2009 Guangzhou champion Shahar Peer 3-6, 7-5, 6-1 on the hardcourts at Guangzhou International Tennis Center.

Heading into Wednesday, 16 women were still in the draw and Cornet was the lone seed, as seven seeds suffered upsets in the opening round.

Chinese qualifier Kai-Lin Zhang doused American Alison Riske 6-2, 7-5 on Day 3, while Puerto Rican Monica Puig dismissed Hong Kong qualifier Ling Zhang 6-4, 6-4.

Other second-round wins came for Chinese wild card Wang Yafan, Romanian Monica Niculescu, Spaniard Maria-Teresa Torro-Flor, Swiss Timea Bacsinszky, and Taiwanese wild card Su-Wei Hsieh.

Thursday's quarterfinals will pit Cornet against the 2012 Guangzhou champ Hsieh; Wang versus Zhang; Niculescu against Puig; and Torro-Flor versus Bacsinszky.

This week's champion will pocket $111,163.
