The Indianapolis Colts hired former San Diego Chargers assistant Greg Williams as defensive backs coach, the team announced Wednesday.

Williams spent the past seven seasons with the Chargers where he worked with Colts' head coach Chuck Pagano's brother, John. Williams served first as assistant linebackers coach for four seasons and then as assistant secondary coach the past three years.

Under Williams' guidance, the San Diego secondary recorded 11 interceptions in 2015 while allowing 22 passing touchdowns, seventh fewest in the league.

Wiiliams replaces Mike Gillhamer, who was fired at the end of the season.
