Manchester, England (SportsNetwork.com) - Manchester City moved into second place in the Premiership table on Thursday as Alvaro Negredo's goal in first- half stoppage time was the difference in a 2-1 City victory over Liverpool at the Etihad Stadium.
Philippe Coutinho's goal after 24 minutes handed Liverpool the lead, but Vincent Kompany equalized seven minutes later and Negredo scored on the stroke of halftime to lift City into second place, one point back of leaders Arsenal.
Liverpool drops to fourth place with the defeat, but the club still sits just three points from the summit.
The home side came within inches of getting off to an ideal start when Aleksandar Kolarov's low cross in the fifth minute was headed against the post by Jesus Navas.
But it was Liverpool that worked its way into the lead in the 24th when a clever flick by Luis Suarez released Raheem Sterling into the penalty area, where he rounded goalkeeper Joe Hart before allowing Coutinho to fire the ball into the empty net from a slightly better angle.
City was behind for just seven minutes, however, and Kompany leveled things at 1-1 when he got on the other end of a driven corner kick from David Silva and redirected a header past goalkeeper Simon Mignolet after holding off defender Martin Skrtel.
With the game approaching halftime the hosts seized the lead thanks to a lovely through ball from Navas, who split two defenders with his pass and put Negredo in on goal. Mignolet got a hand to the shot, but it had just enough power behind it to get over the goal line.
City tightened up its defense after halftime and was determined to see out the rest of the match, while Liverpool's best chance at an equalizer came in the 73rd when Suarez teed up Sterling with a low cross that the young winger fired over the net from eight yards.
Arsenal 3, West Ham 1
London, England - Arsenal returned to winning ways on Thursday as a pair of goals from Theo Walcott and another courtesy of Lukas Podolski helped the Gunners to a 3-1 comeback win at West Ham.
The hosts snatched the lead in the opening minute of the second half when Arsenal goalkeeper Wojciech Szczesny failed to hold a shot from Kevin Nolan, allowing Carlton Cole to score on the rebound.
But the Gunners responded with three goals in 11 minutes to claim a win for the first time in five games in all competitions.
The equalizer arrived in the 68th minute when Walcott's left-footed shot somehow made its way through traffic and past goalkeeper Adrian, who let the ball slip between his hands despite a lack of pace on the shot.
Walcott scored again three minutes later when he headed home a deflected cross from Podolski, who was making his first league appearance since late August.
And the German capped a positive return with a goal 11 minutes from time to kill off the match when he fired home a pass from Olivier Giroud.
Manchester United 3, Hull City 2
Hull, England - Manchester United came from two goals down to snatch a 3-2 win at Hull City on Thursday with Hull defender James Chester scoring a decisive own goal in the 66th minute.
Chester put the Tigers ahead in the fourth minute with a close-range header, while David Meyler made it 2-0 to Hull in the 13th minute with a deflected effort that eluded goalkeeper David De Gea.
But United's response was swift and Chris Smalling brought the Red Devils to within a goal in the 19th minute when he headed home Wayne Rooney's free kick.
Rooney found the net himself seven minutes later to level the contest with a stunning volley from 20 yards that left goalkeeper Allan McGregor with no chance.
Hull rebounded and had the better of the play for a spell in the second half and nearly regained the lead with a header from Alex Bruce that struck the woodwork.
But United completed its comeback in the 66th minute when Ashley Young's cross was redirected by Chester into his own net, giving United a fifth straight win in all competitions.
Crystal Palace 1, Aston Villa 0
Birmingham, England - Crystal Palace climbed out of the relegation zone on Thursday as substitute Dwight Gayle scored in stoppage time to lift his side to a 1-0 win at Aston Villa.
Palace nearly took the lead earlier in the second half when Barry Bannan's shot was pushed onto the post by Villa goalkeeper Brad Guzan, while the home side threatened before the break when a header from Libor Kozak was deflected wide by Adrian Mariappa, preventing the ball from finding the top corner of the net.
But Gayle was the hero on Thursday as he came off the bench and collected a ball on the left wing, dribbled past a Villa defender and fired a shot inside the far post two minutes into added time.
The result lifts Palace out of the bottom three on goal difference, with Villa sitting three points above.
Southampton 3, Cardiff City 0
Cardiff, Wales - Two goals from Jay Rodriguez and another from Rickie Lambert propelled Southampton to a 3-0 win at Cardiff City on Thursday, leaving the Bluebirds just one point clear of the relegation places.
The Saints collected their first win in seven matches due to a first-half surge that saw the visitors score all three of their goals in the span of 13 minutes.
Adam Lallana set up the first goal after 14 minutes with a well-placed cross from the right wing that handed Rodriguez a simple finish.
Lambert knocked a ball down for Rodriguez to fire past goalkeeper David Marshall six minutes later, doubling Southampton's lead, while Rodriguez returned the favor seven minutes later by laying a ball off to Lambert for a first-time finish.
Chelsea 1, Swansea City 0
London, England - A 29th-minute goal from Eden Hazard was enough as Chelsea earned a 1-0 victory over Swansea City at Stamford Bridge on Thursday.
The Blues were in control for much of the match but should have won by a more flattering score as the team's struggles in front of goal once again surfaced.
Hazard provided a moment of class just before the half-hour mark when he cut inside from the left wing and struck a shot toward goal that had plenty of movement. Goalkeeper Gerhard Tremmel appeared to have his view blocked by a defender, but he still should have done better as the ball eluded him.
Chelsea had numerous chances to add to its lead, however Samuel Eto'o was particularly wasteful with the Cameroon international missing a good chance on either side of halftime.
But the result was enough to keep Chelsea within two points of the top spot in the league.
Sunderland 1, Everton 0
Liverpool, England - Sunderland's survival hopes got a shot in the arm on Thursday as the Black Cats secured a 1-0 win at 10-man Everton to sit within three points of safety.
The biggest moment in the match came in the 23rd minute when Everton's Leon Osman failed to control a goal kick from Tim Howard, allowing Ki Sung-yueng to steal the ball and make his way into the penalty area, where he was brought down by Howard, who was shown a straight red card.
Ki picked himself up and scored from the penalty spot against Joel Robles, who came on in place of Howard.
Despite playing down a man Everton piled on the pressure after halftime, but Sunderland goalkeeper Vito Mannone made a handful of strong saves to preserve the win, which is the club's first in seven league matches.
The loss is just the second of the season for Everton, which remains in fifth place.
Newcastle 5, Stoke City 1
Newcastle, England - Newcastle rolled to a 5-1 win over Stoke City at St James' Park on Thursday behind two goals from Loic Remy as Stoke played the entire second half with nine men.
Oussama Assaidi got the day started well for the Potters when he scored on a curling effort in the 29th minute, putting the visitors up 1-0.
However, things took a dramatic turn for the worse before halftime as Glenn Whelan collected a second yellow card in the 40th minute before Marc Wilson pulled down Remy inside the penalty area three minutes later, earning himself a red card and leaving Stoke with nine men.
Goalkeeper Thomas Sorensen saved Remy's penalty kick, but it was just a brief reprieve as the Frenchman leveled the contest before the break for Newcastle.
The second half saw the Magpies batter Stoke, as expected, with Yoan Gouffran taking advantage of a failed clearance to put his team up 2-1 in the 48th.
Remy scored his second goal of the match after a flick from Moussa Sissoko, while Yohan Cabaye found the net after being set up by Mathieu Debuchy.
Papiss Cisse capped the scoring 10 minutes from time as he converted from the penalty spot for his first goal of the campaign.
Fulham 2, Norwich City 1
Norwich, England - A wonderful goal from Scott Parker in the 87th minute helped Fulham to a 2-1 comeback win at Norwich City on Thursday, boosting Fulham's survival hopes.
With just one win from its previous nine league matches, Fulham's day didn't start well as the Cottagers found themselves down 1-0 after 13 minutes to a goal from Gary Hooper, whose shot took a wicked deflection on its way past goalkeeper David Stockdale.
However, Pajtim Kasami had the visitors back on level terms before halftime with a low free kick that made its way through a poorly-constructed wall and into the net.
Parker then stepped forward in the closing minutes to snatch three points for his team when he pounced on a loose ball outside the penalty area and lashed it inside the left post past a diving Ruddy.
The result leaves Fulham in the bottom three on goal difference alone, while Norwich resides three points from the danger zone.
Tottenham 1, West Bromwich 1
London, England - Tottenham was unable to give manager Tim Sherwood a win in his home debut as West Bromwich earned a 1-1 draw at White Hart Lane in Sherwood's first match after being named the full-time manager of Spurs.
Sherwood signed an 18-month contract to manage Tottenham on Monday, and he saw his side get off to a good start in the 36th minute when Christian Eriksen's free kick struck the crossbar and found its way over the goal line.
But the lead lasted just two minutes when Tottenham forward Emmanuel Adebayor made a mess of clearance attempt, allowing Jonas Olsson to easily tap the ball in for the equalizer.
Roberto Soldado went close twice for Tottenham in the final minutes with shots from inside the penalty area, but his lack of accuracy is becoming more and more frustrating for a team that continues to struggle in front of goal.
