HOUSTON -- While Houston could be considered the 'lucky one' after defeating Cincinnati 33-30 Saturday -- despite Bearcats quarterback Gunner Kiel for 523 yards and four touchdowns -- luck certainly wasn't on the Cougars' side with a bizarre third quarter interception.
Leading 30-14, Houston quarterback Greg Ward, Jr. threw a deep pass to receiver Linell Bonner near the goal line only to have the pass picked off by Cincinnati safety Zach Edwards.
At first glance, the pass appeared to be incomplete bouncing off the turf before landing in Edwards hands. After a closer look, the ball actually hit Bonner's foot, keeping the football live.
Before the play, the Cougars rallied for two quick touchdowns and a safety. After the play, Houston had to fight off the Bearcats' momentum to win the game.
"Plays like that happen," Ward said when asked if the interception rattled Houston. "Our receiver kicked the ball and the defender came and dove in. Really wasn't that negative in my head. I was just ready to go back on the field and see if we could make a drive, put some points on the board."
