Pablo Andujar of Spain beat 10th-seeded Croat Marin Cilic in the first round of the $4.425 million Madrid Open.

Andujar defeated Cilic by a 6-7 (6-8), 6-4, 6-1 margin at this clay-court Masters 1000 French Open tune-up.

Gilles Simon, the No. 16 seed, discarded fellow Frenchman Julien Benneteau 2-6, 7-5, 6-3 in other first-round action on Sunday.

Elsewhere, Radek Stepanek cruised past Bernard Tomic 6-3, 6-2; Fernando Verdasco beat David Goffin 7-6 (7-2), 6-2 and Jeremy Chardy ousted Horacio Zeballos 6-4, 7-6 (7-3).

The "Big Four" of 2011 titlist Novak Djokovic, Roger Federer, 2008 champ Andy Murray and two-time winner Rafael Nadal are all on hand this week. The three- time Madrid winner Federer beat Czech slugger Tomas Berdych in last year's finale.
