Charlotte coach Karen Aston has resigned after four seasons on the job and a week after leading the 49ers to the WNIT semifinals.

Aston left Wednesday without securing another job. She said in a news release she wants to be closer to her family in Arkansas.

Athletic director Judy Rose says she's "both shocked and disappointed" with Aston's decision, which came a year after they agreed to a contract extension through the 2014-15 season. Rose says a nationwide search for her replacement will begin immediately.

Aston took over from Amanda Butler in 2007 and led Charlotte to 86 wins, one NCAA tournament appearances and three berths in the WNIT. Charlotte never won fewer than 18 games with Aston and set a school record with 27 victories this season.
