TAMPA, Fla. (AP) New York Yankees closer Aroldis Chapman has worked a perfect inning in his first extended spring training game.
Chapman is working out at the Yankees' minor league complex in Florida while serving a season-opening 30-game suspension stemming from baseball's new domestic violence policy.
Pitching on Derek Jeter Field in an extended spring camp game Wednesday, the left-hander got a broken-bat grounder from Yankees' prospect Carlos Vidal and struck out Estevan Florial and Jared Mitchell on 3-2 pitches.
Chapman, who regularly tops 100 mph with his fastball, reached 98 during a 15-pitch outing.
''He had a good outing,'' Yankees manager Joe Girardi said before Wednesday night's game against the Blue Jays in Toronto. ''His velocity was fine. That was good news.''
Chapman was acquired from Cincinnati in December.
