Demondre Chapman came off the bench to score 17 points and block four shots as No. 8 seed Prairie View A&M beat ninth-seeded Mississippi Valley State 79-63 in the first round of the Southwestern Athletic Conference tournament on Tuesday night.

Tre Hagood finished with 15 points, six rebounds and five assists while Jules Montgomery scored 13 points and grabbed 10 rebounds for Prairie View (9-22). Montrael Scott scored 13 points, John Brisco 11 and Louis Munks 10.

PVAMU, which lost both regular-season games against Mississippi Valley State (9-23), will take on top-seeded Southern (19-12) in the quarterfinals on Wednesday — a rematch of the 2013 SWAC tournament championship game.

Jordan Washington hit two free throws with 13:41 to play, pulling MVSU within four, before the Panthers used a 16-4 run to make it 53-39 with 8 minutes remaining. The Delta Devils trailed by double digits the rest of the way.
