The Philadelphia Union put an end to a five-game winless run on Friday by claiming an impressive 1-0 victory over Sporting Kansas City at Sporting Park.

The Union had not won in MLS regular season play since taking a 2-0 win over D.C. United on Aug. 10, but they showed a great deal of resolve to take maximum points from Eastern Conference opposition in a tough road environment.

Conor Casey provided the lone goal of the match as he put the finishing touches on a well-worked counterattack in the 36th minute.

Danny Cruz found space on the right flank before sending in a cross to the danger area. Sporting failed to cope with the delivery as Michael Farfan unleashed a shot on target from close range that Jimmy Nielsen was able to parry, but Casey was well-positioned to fire home the rebound for his 11th goal of the season.

Philadelphia (11-10-9) moves into fifth place in the Eastern Conference with 42 points, six points shy of Sporting (14-10-6).
