Arlington, TX – Chris Carpenter and the St. Louis Cardinals 1 lead over the Texas Rangers after three innings Monday in Game 5 of the World Series.
Yadier Molina had an RBI single in a two-run second inning for the Cardinals, while Mitch Moreland homered into the second deck for Texas in the third.
The series is tied at two games apiece.
Game 5 is a pitching rematch of Game 1, which the Cardinals won behind Carpenter, who is 3-0 in four starts this postseason. Rangers starter C.J. Wilson is 0-3 in his four playoff starts so far.
Matt Holliday and Lance Berkman walked to start the second inning and Molina delivered a one-out single through the left side to give the Cardinals a 1-0 lead.
Berkman went to third when David Murphy dropped the ball in left field, then scored when Moreland didn't cleanly field Skip Schumaker's grounder to first base.
Wilson escaped a first-and-third jam in the top of the third with a double play, while Moreland made up for his fielding mistake with a one-out blast in the bottom of the inning.
The teams have alternated victories so far, the first time since 1997 that the first four games of the World Series had alternating winning teams.
In the previous 41 times the World Series was tied at two games apiece, the team that won Game 5 went on to capture the series 27 times. But it's only happened on three of the last nine occasions.
Texas is in a good position historically, despite the early deficit, because the home team has won 24 of the 41 Game 5s in a tied World Series.
No matter what, this will be the last game in Arlington this season. Game 6 is scheduled for Wednesday in St. Louis and the Cardinals would also host Game 7 on Thursday if necessary.
