The St. Louis Cardinals have optioned pitcher Fernando Salas to Triple-A Memphis and recalled pitcher Chuckie Fick to fill the roster spot.

Salas led the Cardinals in saves last season with 24, but wasn't the closer as the team made its run to the World Series title. This year, the veteran was 0-2 with a 6.32 earned run average in 18 games.

Fick has never appeared in the majors. He was 1-0 with a 3.86 ERA and two saves in a team-high 21 games for the Redbirds this season.

The 26-year-old right-hander is the nephew of former big leaguer Robert Fick.
