Florham Park, NJ – New York Jets head coach Rex Ryan stated on Friday that newly acquired wide receiver Plaxico Burress will not play in the preseason opener on Monday against the Texans.
Burress, who signed with the club on July 31, will not even make the flight down to Houston as he is recovering from an ankle injury that happened last week when he was running routes in camp.
"We are not going to play him in the game," said Ryan. "They think the altitude when you fly there can increase swelling, that's how it was explained to me. The docs think it's best to keep him here."
Ryan then stated that Burress will get an MRI to make sure the injury is not worse than it seems.
Also, center Nick Mangold could also be held out of Monday's game due to a stinger he suffered on Thursday that caused temporary numbness in one of his arms.
Mangold had X-rays taken on his spine and neck and they revealed no further damage.
