Sofia, Bulgaria – German soccer great Lothar Matthaus was sacked as manager of Bulgaria on Monday just one year after he was hired.
The 50-year-old Matthaus took over for Stanimir Stoilov after Bulgaria lost its first two matches in Euro 2012 qualifying.
But after winning its first game under Matthaus, two draws followed before a 3-0 loss to England and 3-1 defeat to Switzerland, leaving Bulgaria with five points from seven games and well off the pace of the group's top teams.
Bulgaria's Under-21 coach, Mihail Madanski, will assume control on a caretaker basis for the team's next Euro 2012 qualifier against Wales.
