The National Hockey League handed down a one-game suspension to Boston Bruins defenseman Andrew Ference on Thursday.

While contesting a loose puck midway through the first period of the Bruins' 4-1 Eastern Conference quarterfinal-opening victory over Toronto on Wednesday, Ference's arm made contact with the head of Maple Leafs forward Mikhail Grabovski.

No penalty was called on the play and Grabovski remained in the game.

Ference will sit for Game 2 of this best-of-seven series, scheduled for Saturday at TD Garden in Boston.
