Boston Bruins defenseman Andrew Ference was suspended for three games without pay on Sunday by the National Hockey League.

Ference was banned for delivering an illegal check from behind to New York defenseman Ryan McDonagh in overtime of a 3-2 Rangers victory on Saturday.

The 32-year-old was given a major for charging and a game misconduct for his actions, and Marian Gaborik scored the game-winner for the Blueshirts on the advantage.

Ference will forfeit $36,486.48 in salary and is not eligible to return until February 2 when Boston hosts Carolina.
