KISSIMMEE, Fla. (AP) Braves right-hander Mike Foltynewicz, who had a late start to spring training following surgery for blood clots in his shoulder, has been optioned to Triple-A Gwinnett.

Foltynewicz fell short in his bid to make Atlanta's rotation to open the season. He gave up nine runs in 8 2/3 innings this spring for an 8.31 ERA, including five earned runs in three innings against the Astros on Monday.

Foltynewicz, 24, had the surgery in September after the potentially life-threatening blood clots were discovered. He posted a 4-6 record and 5.71 ERA in 2015.

Braves catchers Ryan Lavarnway and Blake Lalli were reassigned to minor league camp..
