Charleston, SC (SportsNetwork.com) - Rising 20-year-old Canadian Eugenie Bouchard defeated Venus Williams on Thursday to reach the quarterfinals at the Family Circle Cup.
The sixth-seeded Bouchard, an Australian Open semifinalist, outlasted the former world No. 1 Williams 7-6 (8-6), 2-6, 6-4 in 2 hours and 14 minutes on the green clay at Family Circle Tennis Center.
Bouchard, ranked No. 20, broke the 33-year-old Williams to end the match. Williams -- who captured this title 10 years ago -- was seeded 11th.
Second-seeded Jelena Jankovic, meanwhile, continued her run to another Charleston final with a 7-5, 6-1 win over Ajla Tomljanovic.
Jankovic, a former world No. 1, won the event in 2007 and was runner-up last year to Serena Williams. She will face Bouchard in the quarterfinals.
Third-seeded former French Open runner-up Sara Errani also moved on, sneaking past Peng Shuai 7-6 (8-6), 7-6 (7-5).
Ninth-seeded Lucie Safarova, the 2012 runner-up, beat former U.S. Open champion and 2010 Charleston winner Samantha Stosur, who was seeded seventh, 3-6, 6-4, 6-4.
No. 14 seed Andrea Petkovic defeated No. 4 seed Sabine Lisicki, also a former Charleston champion, 6-1, 6-0; and Belinda Bencic beat Elina Svitolina 6-7 (4-7), 6-4, 6-1 to set up a match with Errani. Petkovic will play Safarova.
Also in the round of 16, 12th-seeded Daniela Hantuchova beat Teliana Pereira 6-2, 6-3 and Jana Cepelova upended 13th-seeded Elena Vesnina 7-6 (7-4), 3-6, 6-3.
Hantuchova will battle the world No. 78 Cepelova, who shocked Serena Williams in the second round on Tuesday.
