Barcelona defender Gerard Pique has been released from the hospital after a heavy collision at Camp Nou during the club's Champions League semifinal, it was announced Wednesday.

Pique clashed with Barcelona goalkeeper Victor Valdes in the first half of Tuesday's crucial match against Chelsea and was substituted after just 25 minutes. The former Manchester United defender was feared to have a concussion and consequently spent the night in the hospital before being discharged early Wednesday.

"Gerard Pique has been discharged from hospital after follow-up medical tests proved satisfactory," a club statement said. "The Barcelona FC defender spent the night in hospital under observation after a heavy collision with Didier Drogba and Victor Valdes in the early stages of the match against Chelsea.

"The player will now rest for a week before being re-assessed."

Barcelona and Chelsea played to a 2-2 draw in the semifinal but the Blues advanced after claiming a 1-0 victory in the opening leg.
