Davide Ballardini has been named the new manager of Cagliari, replacing Massimo Ficcadenti after he was fired on Tuesday.

Ballardini, 47, will be taking over at the club for a third time having previously managed the Sardinian outfit during the 2005-06 and 2007-08 seasons.

"Davide Ballardini is Cagliari's new coach," read a statement from the club. "The new Rossoblu coach returns after guiding the Islanders in the 2005-06 and 2007-08 campaigns."

Ballardini becomes the third coach of the club in the past year with Ficcadenti replacing Roberto Donadoni over the summer.

But after beginning the season with three wins in his first five games, Ficcadenti's side is on a run of five games without a win, leaving the club in 10th place.

Ballardini's last coaching role was with Genoa before the two sides parted ways over the summer, and his first game in charge at Cagliari will come at Inter Milan on November 19.
